Ladera Ranch’s landscape-management plans took a concrete step forward last week. In a September 10 announcement, LARMAC said its board approved additional measures to reduce routine synthetic pesticide use in areas it maintains.
LARMAC says school fields, sports fields, playgrounds, and turf areas were already maintained without routine synthetic pesticides. The expanded approach now includes planters in neighborhood and pocket parks, planters along paseos and walkways, and clubhouse, pool, and plunge grounds. In those designated areas, management will prioritize mechanical, cultural, biological, and organic-compatible methods instead of routine synthetic herbicides and plant-growth regulators.
The board also directed management to evaluate alternatives for slopes and other lower-use areas, as well as current rodent and insect-management practices. These are steps in an ongoing process—not a completed community-wide organic plan. LARMAC says management and its advisory committee will report back at the November 11 board meeting, with a revised Organic Land Management Plan targeted for board consideration by year’s end.
For residents who have followed this issue, the next useful things to watch are the promised map of covered areas, updates on how alternatives perform, and the November progress report. The announcement does not establish a cause for any reported illness, and these landscape decisions should not be read as doing so.
